Lesson 3 Colors and Shapes in Greek

Colors and shapes are fundamental vocabulary for describing objects, people, and the world around us. In this lesson, you will learn common colors and shapes in Greek, along with their pronunciation and usage in everyday sentences.

3. Using Colors and Shapes in Sentences

Describing Colors:

  • The car is red.

    • Το αυτοκίνητο είναι κόκκινο. (To aftokínito íne kókino.)
  • The sky is blue.

    • Ο ουρανός είναι μπλε. (O ouranós íne ble.)

Describing Shapes:

  • The table is square.

    • Το τραπέζι είναι τετράγωνο. (To trapézi íne tetrágono.)
  • The moon is a circle.

    • Το φεγγάρι είναι κύκλος. (To fengári íne kíklos.)

Combining Colors and Shapes:

  • The orange ball is round.

    • Η πορτοκαλί μπάλα είναι στρογγυλή. (I portokalí bála íne strongylí.)
  • The green rectangle is big.

    • Το πράσινο ορθογώνιο είναι μεγάλο. (To prásino orthogónio íne megálo.)

 

4. Practice Exercises

Exercise 1: Match the Colors

Match the Greek colors with their English translations:

  1. Πράσινο
  2. Κόκκινο
  3. Μαύρο
  4. Μπλε

Exercise 2: Describe Objects

  • What shape is it?

    • Τι σχήμα έχει; (Ti schíma éhi?)
  • It is green and round.

    • Είναι πράσινο και στρογγυλό. (Íne prásino ke strongyló.)

 

6. Cultural Note

In Greek, colors can change their endings to match the gender (masculine, feminine, or neuter) and number of the noun they describe. For example:

  • Κόκκινος καναπές (Kókkinos kanapés – Red couch [masculine])
  • Κόκκινη καρέκλα (Kókkini karékla – Red chair [feminine])
  • Κόκκινο βιβλίο (Kókino vivlío – Red book [neuter])
