Lesson 8 Transportation and Directions in Greek

Knowing how to talk about transportation and ask for or give directions is essential when traveling in Greece. This lesson introduces common vocabulary for transportation, directions, and useful phrases for navigating Greek cities and towns.

3. Useful Phrases for Directions

Asking for Directions:

  • Where is the bus station?

    • Πού είναι ο σταθμός των λεωφορείων; (Pou íne o stathmós ton leoforíon?)
  • How do I get to the airport?

    • Πώς πάω στο αεροδρόμιο; (Pós páo sto aerodrómio?)
  • Is it far?

    • Είναι μακριά; (Íne makriá?)
  • Can you show me on the map?

    • Μπορείτε να μου δείξετε στον χάρτη; (Boríte na mou díxete ston chárti?)

Giving Directions:

  • Turn left.

    • Στρίψτε αριστερά. (Strípste aristerá.)
  • Turn right.

    • Στρίψτε δεξιά. (Strípste dexiá.)
  • Go straight ahead.

    • Πηγαίνετε ευθεία. (Piyénete efthía.)

 

4. Sample Conversations

Informal:

A: Πού είναι ο σταθμός του μετρό;
(Pou íne o stathmós tou metrό? – Where is the metro station?)

B: Είναι κοντά, δίπλα στην πλατεία.
(Íne kondá, dípla stin platía. – It’s near, next to the square.)


 

Formal:

A: Συγγνώμη, πώς πάω στο λιμάνι;
(Signómi, pós páo sto limáni? – Excuse me, how do I get to the port?)

B: Στρίψτε δεξιά και συνεχίστε ευθεία.
(Strípste dexiá ke sinechíste efthía. – Turn right and continue straight ahead.)


 

5. Practice Exercises

Exercise 1: Match the Vocabulary

Match the Greek words with their English meanings:

  1. Λεωφορείο
  2. Μετρό
  3. Αριστερά
  4. Μακριά
    • a. Left
    • b. Bus
    • c. Metro
    • d. Far

Exercise 2: Translate to Greek

Translate the following sentences into Greek:

  1. Where is the train station?
