Lesson 3 Asking and Answering Basic Questions in Greek

Learning to ask and answer simple questions is essential for conversations in Greek. This lesson focuses on commonly used phrases and questions, helping you navigate basic interactions.


 

1. Common Questions and Answers

Informal Questions:

  • Πώς σε λένε; (Pós se léne? – What’s your name?)

    • Με λένε… (Me léne… – My name is…)
  • Από πού είσαι; (Apó pou íse? – Where are you from?)

    • Είμαι από… (Íme apó… – I’m from…)
  • Πώς είσαι; (Pós íse? – How are you?)

    • Είμαι καλά, ευχαριστώ. (Íme kalá, efcharistó. – I’m fine, thank you.)
    • Εσύ; (Esý? – And you?)

Formal Questions:

  • Πώς σας λένε; (Pós sas léne? – What’s your name? [formal])

    • Με λένε… (Me léne… – My name is…)
  • Από πού είστε; (Apó pou íste? – Where are you from? [formal])

    • Είμαι από… (Íme apó… – I’m from…)
  • Πώς είστε; (Pós íste? – How are you? [formal])

    • Είμαι καλά, ευχαριστώ. (Íme kalá, efcharistó. – I’m fine, thank you.)

A: Με λένε Νίκος. Από πού είσαι;
(Me léne Níko. Apó pou íse? – My name is Nikos. Where are you from?)

B: Είμαι από την Ελλάδα. Εσύ;
(Íme apó tin Elláda. Esý? – I’m from Greece. And you?)

A: Είμαι από την Ιταλία.
(Íme apó tin Italía. – I’m from Italy.)


 

Formal:

A: Καλημέρα σας! Πώς σας λένε;
(Kaliméra sas! Pós sas léne? – Good morning! What’s your name?)

B: Με λένε Ανδρέα Παπαδόπουλο. Εσάς;
(Me léne Andréa Papadópoulo. Esás? – My name is Andreas Papadopoulos. And you?)

A: Με λένε Ελένη Κωνσταντίνου. Από πού είστε;
(Me léne Eléni Konstantínou. Apó pou íste? – My name is Eleni Konstantinou. Where are you from?)

B: Είμαι από την Κύπρο. Εσείς;
(Íme apó tin Kýpro. Esís? – I’m from Cyprus. And you?)

A: Είμαι από την Ελλάδα.
(Íme apó tin Elláda. – I’m from Greece.)


 

4. Practice Exercises

Exercise 1: Match the Phrases

Match the Greek questions with their English translations:

  1. Πώς σε λένε;
  2. Από πού είσαι;
  3. Πώς είσαι;
    • a. How are you?
    • b. Where are you from?
    • c. What’s your name?

Exercise 2: Fill in the Blanks

Complete the following sentences:
